Structure of the PhD Program

An exceptional number and a broad variety of graduate courses are offered in the master and PhD programs in Bonn. These consist of systematic cycles of graduate courses in the different areas of mathematics that provide a very solid background necessary to enter research, and specialized ‘topics’ courses with varying content, often from current research.

The doctoral student will work under the supervision of a professor on a research project leading to a PhD Thesis as an independent piece of research. The standard duration is 3 years, and the degree earned is the "Doctor of Natural Sciences - Dr. rer nat.". A first degree is required; this will usually be a master degree, but in exceptional cases a bachelor degree may suffice. There are plenty of funding possibilities.
