Abstract:

Eigenvectors of square matrices are central to linear algebra. Eigenvectors of tensors are a natural generalization, and they have numerous applications. The first lecture presents an introduction to the spectral theory of tensors, highlighting algebraic aspects, connections to dynamics and optimization, and recent results. The second lecture explores the algebraic geometry of mixtures of Gaussian random variables. We present recent work with Amendola and Ranestad on the identifiability of these widely used statistical models.
