Plücker Lecture 2018 by Sir John Ball

Sir John Ball, Oxford University
Variational problems in hard and soft matter
Part one: Solid phase transformations
Time: 16.15-17.00, 22 October 2018
Part two: Liquid crystals
Time: 17.30-18:15, 22 October 2018
Abstract:
Alloys undergoing solid phase transformations and liquid crystals give rise to similar problems of the multi-dimensional calculus of variations. The lectures will explore the similarities and differences, touching on issues such as the choice of function spaces, the description of defects and relation to dynamics, and highlighting some challenging open problems.
Coffee will be served between the lectures
Drinks will be served after the lecture
Venue: Lipschitz-Hall, Mathematics Centre, Endenicher Allee 60.
