The GlobalMathNetwork is our program to encourage PhD students of BIGS to spend an extended research stay abroad. BIGS provides funding for such visits for a duration of 4 weeks up to 4 months. BIGS PhD student can choose a math department or institute worldwide for their visit abroad.

PhD students of BIGS are encouraged to make use of this opportunity, for instance, for one term during the second year of PhD studies. BIGS reimburses travel expenses for one round-trip, and contributes to the living and accommodation expenses up to a certain limit depending on the country of travel. The maximum for daily allowance and accommodation reimbursement is 1,5 times the allowance set by the DFG for fellowship holders.

How to apply:

If you want to take advantage of GlobalMathNetwork, please send an application to the BIGS Director that includes the following information:

• the department or institute to visit;

• the dates of the intended visit (possibly estimated);

• the name of the mentor or scientific contact at the host institution;

• an invitation from the host institution for the intended visiting period

• a short justification why the visit is beneficial for your thesis work.

We expect that you have discussed your plans with your supervisor; please arrange that your supervisor sends a supporting statement (by email). You can only take advantage of the program during the first three years of your PhD studies.

Further information:

BIGS signed an agreement with the following four distinguished partner institutes: the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, the Departement de Mathematiques et Applications, Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris, the Department of Mathematics and Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto University and the Bejing International Center for Mathematical Research at Peking University. These partners offer the status of ’visiting PhD student’ to incoming BIGS students; it includes visa sponsorship (if applicable), shared office space, access to library, internet and computer facilities, invitation to social activities, and tuition waiver. The visiting status does not include the right to acquire course credits.

Please note that GlobalMathNetwork is not limited to these partner institutions, but at other institutions you might have to arrange the practical aspects of the visit yourself.
