Bernd Sturmfels, MPI Leipzig

Title: Geometry of Tensors.

Date: 4 - 5 December 2017

Part one: Tensors and their Eigenvectors

Time: 4 December 2017, 17:15

Coffee will be served before the lecture.

The BIGS Party will take place after the lecture.

Part two: Gaussian Mixtures and their Tensors

Time: 5 December 2017, 14:15

Coffee will be served after the lecture.

Venue: Lipschitz-Hall, Mathematics Centre, Endenicher Allee 60.

Eigenvectors of square matrices are central to linear algebra. Eigenvectors of tensors are a natural generalization, and they have numerous applications. The first lecture presents an introduction to the spectral theory of tensors, highlighting algebraic aspects, connections to dynamics and optimization, and recent results. The second lecture explores the algebraic geometry of mixtures of Gaussian random variables. We present recent work with Amendola and Ranestad on the identifiability of these widely used statistical models.
